Inital KH2 Impressions

So despite spending most of my day hanging ceiling fans and falling off ladders I managed to get some time in with KH2. I logged about 40 minutes of the game which translates to about 5 minutes of actual playing. So far I am really impressed with the game dynamics and the controls. Everything about this one screams refinement. You can read more in my review which should be coming soon.

UMD is Dead?

Not yet, but it sure is on the way. NextGen is carrying a story that Wal-Mart is going to stop carrying UMD movies and many Hollywood studios are going to discontinue producing movies on UMD due to a downward trend in sales. Has Sony ever made a format that caught on?

Episode 20

Hello everyone, its that time again where your voice and opinion can be heard in the podcast world. We will be recording this Friday at 7pm, we would like to hear your opinion on the topic of "The Virtual Gambler".

-What's the appeal of the online or virtual gambling environment?
-What's the future of this genre given the growth of the online marketplace?
-How does the reality of real gambling compare to it's virtual cousin?
-Are there any drawbacks if the money (aka stakes) are the same in both
environments?

We will also be talking about the evolution of the online marketplace and how gambling can be a new option in online gaming. We would love to hear your opinion on the matter. If you would like to email us or send us an audio feedback, please remember to keep this very short and clean. Audio soundbytes should be no longer than 10 seconds.

Again, just a friendly reminder that your responses in the forums are to be kept short and concise. Thanks for listening!

Kingdom Hearts 2

That is right, this week is the release of Kingdom Hearts 2. The original KH was a game that Dots and I became very immersed in back when SBG was started and I think it helped fuel our passion for this site. I have been waiting for this week for a very long time and fate would have to put the release at one of the busiest times for me. Thanks fate.

RUMOR: Multiplayer Grand Theft Auto in the works

Wayne wrote:
According to Gamestop, Rockstar North posted a press release about positions for people with networking backgrounds. While Rockstar North has done more than just Grand Theft Auto, that series is their pride and joy.

I myself have grown tired of the Grand Theft Auto series, and I was greatly disappointed when San Andreas didn't turn out to have online multiplayer as rumored. I'll admit that I only played the game for 10-15 minutes, but I just wasn't feeling it. Rockstar North finally coming out with an online multiplayer GTA game may be exactly what it takes for me to give the franchise one final spin.

Everything must come to an end, and it is official. Sony is finally ceasing production on the PSOne. While I'm not a big fan of them as a company, I have to give credit where credit is due. The original Playstation (all versions) has sold a ridiculous number of units, and the fact that it still sold up until almost the very end of the Playstation 2's lifecycle really says something about the large variety of games that are available under the Playstation name. I am greatly impressed.

CONFIRMED: Genesis games will be available on the Revolution

Wayne wrote:
I reported this as a rumor close to a week ago, but it has officially been confirmed.

According to Nintendo, over 1,000 games for Sega's Genesis console, released in 1989, will be added to the Revolution's library. Joining them will be an undisclosed number of titles from the Hudson's TurboGrafx console, also released in 1989 and codeveloped by electronics giant NEC. Though no specific titles were mentioned, Nintendo said it is taking a "best of" approach in selecting which games will come to the Revolution.

Starcraft Ghost ghosted?

To steal the words of a poster over at Joystiq, it seems that Starcraft Ghost has more or less been canned. This is no surprise to me really since Blizzard is one of the slowest developers on the planet, but it's more than worth it. After all, Warcraft 3 got completely scrapped after a year or so of development and was redone from the ground up because the idea they had just wasn't working to their standards.

Blizzard will likely bring this game out midway though the next generation's life cycle. At least, that's my guess.

Dell to buy Alienware

There were rumblings of this earlier this week, but it looks like it's going to happen. I can't say I am surprised at all. The purchasing power of Dell in conjunction with the premium of Alienware just increases the profit margin of the boutique PC store. I just wonder what this will do to their customer service. Great hardware does you no good if it isn't backed by a decent warranty in the event that it breaks.

Among other things discussed are the Playstation Network online service, the PS3 HDD, and the fact that PS3 will be region free (as far as games are concerned). I'm really excited about the last fact, because I am a bitter opponent of region coding. I can't stand missing out on the one or two good titles that never get released here, but it's often not worth the trouble to get a mod just for a handful of games.

Microsoft to make a portable?

JoeHonkie wrote:
Dean Takahashi of the Jan Jose Mercury News is reporting that Microsoft has it\'s own portable gaming device and \"iPod killer\" in the works. Sound familiar? He seems to think they are going to make their own take on the PSP.

Check out the original article here.

I\'m personally not sure that the portable market is as competition friendly as the normal console market (espescially looking at past blunders into the market). If Sony steps up and has the market locked up between them and Nintendo, I don\'t really believe there\'s a lot of room for a third competitor. However, the PSP has some disadvantages in the battery life and loading time department that Microsoft might be able to use against them. A lot will change if the much-rumored 4GB flash PSP makes it to market after E3. At this point nothing is written in stone.

Not...Halo...3?

Apparently Gameinformer has an article on a game that's not Halo 3, but does involve Forerunners and the Master Chief. It will supposedly be freeform with the option to ignore or bypass objectives you don't feel like doing (at a penalty). It will also feature huge persistent worlds. The game will be called "Forerunner."

Sounds cool, since a lot of this was what Halo was originally supposed to be like (those of you who followed the game from its first public announcement may remember that it went through a lot of changes before what we finally saw). Let's hope all the extra features make it into the final version this time. Please be aware that this is still very early information, and for all we know could turn out to be something totally different.

Admin Update: Joe Honkie says that he can't find anything about this in any thing related to GameInformer and that he thinks this could very well be total BS. Take this news with a block of salt.

MS to announce new Rare Game

Game Informer is reporting that Microsoft has plans to announce a new Rare game tomorrow.

While Microsoft has kept details of the announcement secret, sources close to Game Informer Online have revealed that the game will be called Viva Piñata.

Too bad it is a new franchise and not a sweet remake of Blast Corps or something else.

PS3 delay is official

Gamespot is reporting that an official PS3 delay should be coming out tomorrow.

Citing an anonymous source, the article says the reason for the postponement--which has been widely predicted by analysts and executives--is that the electronics giant is having issues with the Blu-ray Disc format, which the PS3 uses.

Loki is coming

Loki, a hack n slash RPG made by France's Cyanide Studios will be releasing in September of this year. It will be available on the PC.

Now, the press release that I have does not specify if that is a European or American release. I hope perhaps we can get a simultaneous release, because the screenshots of this game look pretty nice. I think I could really enjoy a game like this, and it's different enough (at least in environment) from the Diablo series that I could probably get right into it without getting bored a few hours in.

Wouldn't this be something though if this game saw a European release before an American one? That just about never happens.

HD-DVD to launch with NO movies

JoeHonkie wrote:
I know we're a games site, but we all want to keep track of the next-gen format war considering how closely it is tied into the next-gen gaming systems.

Arstechnica is reporting that the only surefire backer of HD-DVD has delayed the release of their first few videos. This means Toshiba HD-DVDs will be hitting the shelves with nothing to play on them! I'm a hardcore early adopter, but I'm already a little hesitant to choose between the two formats early, and even I'm not crazy enough to buy something that doesn't actually do anything yet. Arstechnica points out that they will still have a lead over Blu-Ray and support from Microsoft, but we know MS will switch sides if this thing falters too much. Besides, we all know how well console add-ons do in the market. Certainly nothing is etched in stone for either side yet, but this is a huge blunder to start out with.

A Neverwinter Nights MMO?

Maybe. Or it could be something completely new. It seems that Bioware has created a new development studio to work solely on a new MMO. There are no details on whether it'll be based on a current franchise or if it will be something new. Still, after falling in love with Neverwinter Nights in recent history, and knowing how many people are still enjoying the game (just check out our NWN community forums!), I would think that this could actually give World of Warcraft a run for its money.

Whether it be an old franchise or new, I am quite excited. Hehehe!

Sony pulls a Nintendo?

Rumors going around are saying that Sony is planning on having a downloadable content service like the Revolution that will allow people to play PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3.

Ok, for starters, if you haven't played all the PS1 games you are interested in at this point, there's something wrong with you. You had TWO opportunities. I even picked up a couple of PS1 games I never got around to playing when I got my PS2. Still... the last thing I would do is play a PS1 game on a $500 machine.

Now, let's not forget that the PS3 is expected to be backwards compatible anyhow. Ebay people! Finding these discs of these old games is not that hard. Unless they are shrink-wrapped, most of these games are affordable just to get used copies.

And seriously... those will be some huge freaking downloads! I suppose we can store those downloads on our internal hard drive. Oh wait... we're not going to have one.

If this is even remotely true, then I truly believe that Sony has completely lost it. I mean... completely.

    My apologies as well

I haven't been around as much to update the main page. Work has been crazy, and I've been working more hours lately, so when I'm home, updating Snackbar is the last thing I think about. I'll do my best to post something here and there, but don't expect me back in full force for another week.

So, with that being said, I apologize, but not to worry... you haven't lost me for good.

    Beta Twilight Princess screenshot

Hyrule.net has a screenshot from the Beta of Twilight Pricess. The caption with the image just said "look closely and you might see something new". I wonder what that means.

IGN has screens of Lego Star Wars II, and they are sweet. The first game was completely awesome, espescially in the visuals category, and the sequel isn't about to buck the trend if these screenshots are any indication. I'm totally psyched!

Long lines, system shortages, and lots of money for Nintendo is the news today. The DS Lite launched to massive crowds, and apparently sold out quickly. Not much else to say, except I hope they are able to ramp up production soon.

    Need Your Take!

It's that time again everyone! We want to know what you gamers think. For our next podcast recording we will be discussing what is wrong with today's genres in our games. Are they shallow? Are they not very innovative? What is missing?

For our second segment we will be covering the Hollywood Invasion in our games. Do big named actors make the game? Is it fair they get a bigger budget? What do you think about TV/Film to game concepts?

If you want to chime in on these topics or anything related to gaming please remember to keep them short and clean. You can also give us your feedback in our forums in this thread. And finally you can send us audio feedback no longer than ten seconds. You can send all these to be heard on the cast to podcast@snackbar-games.com

    Lik-Sang reviews DS Lite

    JoeHonkie wrote:
Lik-Sang has a nice review of the DS Lite, complete with pictures. The good news is a brighter screen, better d-pad and buttons, and stronger battery. The bad news (from my personal perspective) is that it doesn't seem dramatically smaller, and it can't use the DS/GBA SP charging cable. I'm still on the fence about replacing my DS.

    CG Prerendered trailer for Superman

    JoeHonkie wrote:
EA has put up a pre-rendered trailer for Superman. Like their other pre-rendered trailers, this one tells you absolutely nothing about how the game will play or what it will look like, but since it's a Superman game, I think I will assume it is terrible until I have evidence otherwise. I mean, Superman doesn't exactly have an awesome track record in the video game category. Soap operas he can do, but not video games.
